Sailing in Crown Boats is a great way to learn to sail at Sea Cadets. There are usually 3 to 5 Cadets in a boat and they all have different roles to play in sailing the boat.
Feva Yachts are a fun way to sail for more experienced Sea Cadets. These small yachts are usually crewed by 2 Cadets and when the wind gets up, you really can fly along the water!
Pulling is another water based activity that we do at TS Bellona and is great for learning to work together as a team.
Pulling also features as one of the highly competitive races that take place at the Northern Area and National Regattas.
Kayaking is another activity that we do, especially when we are doing activities with other local Sea Cadet Units.
Sea Cadets also learn Rifle Shooting alongside their other activities. They shoot at targets in a controlled environment on an indoor shooting range.
Supervised by RSO (Range Safety Officer) qualified Sea Cadet staff, this activity is enjoyed by Cadets. A points based target shooting competition called the Smit Trophy is held each year between all the Cadet Forces Units nationwide.
Sea Cadets are taught basic first aid and casualty evacuation. We sometimes conduct realistic practise such as the photo opposite.
TS Bellona cadets often participate in events together with other units. These events include camps, and trips to places such as Whangarei or Tauranga.
Camps are one of the most popular programs, where cadets have competitions with other sea cadet units, but also learn new skills together and make friends.
Once Sea Cadets have some experience, they may be eligible to take part in some Boating Courses which include the Coastguard Day Skipper's qualification and the Coxswain's Course.
Leadership courses are for cadets that have some experience and are keen to progress further up the ranks. There are various leadership courses that a Sea Cadet has to do in order to be eligible for promotion.
These courses teach many subjects but the core subjects are Leadership and skills to help them instruct and mentor Junior Cadets
