FAQ

Who can join?

Any young person aged 13 – 15 years old (enrolled in High School). You don't need to be a NZ citizen. We accept cadets with special needs, just contact us to discuss how we can integrate you within our activities.

I'm keen to get involved in assisting, how do you become an adult staff member?

We're always on the lookout for keen volunteers. Our staff come from a range of backgrounds, including military, ex-cadets, parents or anyone else. Depending on the time you have to commit, you may wish to take a commission and become an officer, assist in administering the unit, provide training or become a member of our support committee. Anyone involved directly with the cadets must go through a standard police check.

How do the NZQA credits work?

New Zealand Cadets Forces offers a wide range of training and activities which are recognised within the NZQA framework. Our unit standard credits cover our drill, firearm safety, boating activities, first aid etc.

Is it really strict?

We operate in a structured, positive learning environment. We expect our cadets to hold themselves to a high standard, act responsibly and be accountable. We do not tolerate bullying behaviour at any level.

Where do I get my uniform from?

After your initially training, a uniform will be provided to you for your use while a member of the unit. It must be returned in good condition when you finish your cadet career. You will need to provide some black boots, socks and purchase a unit baseball cap.

Will joining TS Bellona guarantee me entry into the Navy?

No. The Royal New Zealand Navy cannot give preference to people who have been involved in Sea Cadets as that would disadvantage those who cannot access our training. Being a member of our unit will assist you in evidencing your commitment, leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, all traits that the RNZN looks for in their new recruits.

How much time will this take up?

Our regular parade nights take about 2.5 hours per week. We have activities most weekend throughout the school terms. These are not compulsory but we recommend people attend regularly because they are really fun, and it gives you the chance to apply the things you've learned during the parade nights.

I go to church on Sundays, does that mean I'll miss out?

Not necessarily. We do a range of activities, including some on Saturdays. Just speak to us about your other commitments, we'll do our best to fit in with you.
