About Sea Cadets

The Sea Cadet Corps is part of New Zealand Cadet Forces and provides training for teenagers in leadership, self-discipline, teamwork, and self-reliance through the medium of the sea. Sailing, boat work and adventure feature high on the list of exciting and worthwhile activities you can do with the Sea Cadets.

SAILING
Sea Cadet Units have sailing boats, which are used for all aspects of sailing and seamanship training. You might be learning right now, but in a few years you will be taking full responsibility for your own crew out on the water as coxswain of the boat.

LEADERSHIP
After about on year in the Sea Cadets you could be eligible to go on a Leadership Course conducted at the Royal New Zealand Naval College in Auckland. After two years you could be promoted to Leading Cadet and be in charge of younger cadets and their training. All along, you will learn self-discipline and responsibility from fully qualified Sea Cadet Officers and instructors.

ADVENTURE CAMPS
An important part of your training will be taking part in organised Adventure Camps. You may attend a camp with your own Sea Cadet Unit or a Joint Service camp with cadets from the Army and Air Force. Sea Cadet Units often hold Sailing Camps where crews camp out and sail every day.

SHOOTING
Fully qualified instructors trained by Defence Department personnel will teach you firearm safety under strictly controlled conditions. Once you have learned to handle a firearm safely, you will be able to enter target-shooting competitions against other cadets or units.
